In Chapter 20 mail starts to come in called Any Marine letters, which are letters that civilians write to marines that dont get many letters. An example being in the STA Cortes is the one that gets the least amount of letters so he gets a few. Usually the letters are from girls that are about the same age as the marines. Soon every marine has a letter in their ruck and they need to get rid of them so First Sargent Martinez calls for an All Marine Corps call for potential band memebers. The band members get to skip out on fighting and duties to play. The marines that show out are boots and they get tricked because they are punished for trying to get the easy way out. Their punishment is to reply to all the unanwsered letters that the Any Marines sent. Meanwhile, Swafford is writing letter back home. He stoped writing to his cheating girlfriend, instead he writes to her friends and his mom. He gets a letter that says the she has married. This makes him mad because he hasn't even meet the guy.
